Sally's Story

Sally's mother has been visually impaired since 1999. The help and support offered by DAB made a huge difference not only to her mother, but to the whole family.

After completing her studies Sally found herself with some spare time. From seeing first hand the difference that DAB had made to her mother's life, Sally decided to volunteer as not only would it boost her CV, but would also make a real difference to visually impaired people in Derbyshire.

After speaking to another volunteer at an awareness day, Sally rang DAB to register as a volunteer. Before she knew it the whole process was underway. She came in and met other volunteers, completed an enhanced CRB check and completed the training required for volunteers.

It was only once the process had started that Sally realised the full extent of volunteering opportunities. She decided an admin or office role would not make the best use of her talents and began volunteering for the children and young people department as a children's project worker. She now volunteers once a week with visually impaired children and young people from across Derbyshire.

"It's difficult enough growing up without a visual impairment. It's nice to see the difference just a couple of hours of your time can make".
